The best tips and trends

Get BETTER Sleep / these tips have completely transformed my sleep health. They are simple, not expensive, but may take some effort to fully implement into your lifestyle.

▪️read 30 minutes before bed (instead of TV or phone use), I use a Kindle on the darkest setting

▪️In the hour or so before bed, limit bright lights, exposure to blue light, and keep lights on the lowest setting. Consider glasses that block blue light or try red light in the bedroom (we have a @hatch)

▪️keep your wake & bed times consistent throughout the week, including the weekend. For me this looks like, asleep around 9:30 pm and awake between 5-6 am

▪️eat dinner early & avoid later light snacking or eating. I don’t really eat past 6 pm

▪️you sleep better in cooler temperatures, we keep it around 68 degrees!

▪️avoid caffeine later in the day, I try not to have any caffeine in the afternoon

▪️when I say supportive partner, I mean a partner on the same schedule as you. This isn’t always in your control, but it makes it so much easier when you are on a similar sleep schedule

▪️if you need supplementation, magnesium is shown to improve sleep. I have the @perelelhealth magnesium powder, & take occasionally as needed

▪️research suggests a warm shower in the evening can help lower your body’s core temperature & signal it’s time for sleep. I always do an evening shower followed by my skincare routine

▪️get as much sunlight into your eyes throughout the day - especially within the first hour of waking & the afternoon

▪️alcohol reallly disrupts your sleep. Better to avoid altogether, but if you are going to have a drink or two, avoid in the evening close to your bedtime

▪️avoid social media & being on your phone right before bed. Put your phone on a schedule to go on DND automatically every night

Save for future reference 🫶🏼 How do you prioritize your sleep?

“Waterless” skincare isn’t really a thing… and since when did water become something to be afraid of in an ingredient list?? 🙄 The addition of water to skincare products is actually really important to the formulation of a product and the ability for that product to spread on your skin.

Beaware of anyone that is telling you everything you’ve been doing is wrong & this is the only product that is going to fix your skin 🚩🚩🚩

Instead, I recommend sticking with evidence-based products and a simple routine that WORKS. Skincare doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Follow me @elizabethrusseau.np for more simple skincare tips to achieve your healthiest skin yet 😘

things I DON’T do or use as a Dermatology NP ➡️

🔺 perfume gives me a headache & added fragrance in skincare is never good for my sensitive skin. Plus there’s some evidence that added fragrance may cause health issues internally, so this is an easy one to avoid

🔺 eyelash serums can be irritating & have potential side effects, so not worth it for me

🔺 moist wounds heal better than dry wounds!

🔺avoid manicures that cut away or remove the cuticle, our cuticles play an important role to protect our nails from infection

🔺 I find sheet masks wasteful & annoying to wear

🔺 flavored chapsticks can actually exacerbate irritation & dryness. Instead I recommend a petrolatum based ointment like Aquaphor or Cerave Healing Ointment

🔺Hot water can worsen rosacea & redness, instead I recommend sticking with lukewarm to cool water

🔺feminine washes are not necessary & can cause other issues down there..

🔺powdered sunscreen is unreliable & should not be used as your primary sunscreen/protective measure

🔺 at-home skin tag removal products can cause bleeding, infection, & even scarring. These are easy & safe to remove in clinic, so I would avoid the at-home options in these cases

Any of these surprise you?!

BENZOYL PEROXIDE vs SALICYLIC ACID ➡️ If you have acne, you may be familiar with these two popular topical treatments, but you may not realize that they actually work differently & one may work better than the other depending on what type of acne you have.
⁣
➡️Benzoyl peroxide - Works within the pore to kill the bacteria that causes acne (P. acnes). It comes in cleansers, masks, or leave on products from 2.5-10% OTC
⁣
➡️ Salicylic acid - Works within the pore to loosen and unclog sebum, oil, and bacteria. These products come in cleansers, masks, solutions, pads, sprays, or leave on products from 0.25-2%.

🔺If you have more red inflammatory breakouts (papules, pustules): Use a product with benzoyl peroxide
⁣
🔻if you have more comedonal acne (texture, blackheads, or whiteheads): Stick to a product with salicyclic acid⁣⁣

🔻If you have BOTH: I typically recommend a benzoyl peroxide cleanser in the AM, followed by a retinoid like adapalene 0.1 gel 3 nights a week as tolerated. You should not use two ingredients in the same routine.
⁣
TIPS for STARTING:
1️⃣ Start slowly & only introduce one new product at a time
2️⃣ Be careful with benzoyl peroxide as it can bleach clothing/bedding/towels
3️⃣If you have more sensitive skin, I recommend these products in a cleanser form
4️⃣ If you are pregnant, avoid adapalene/differin gel.
5️⃣ Stop these products prior to any waxing, laser, or facial services

If you are looking for specific acne products, comment ACNE & I will DM you a link with some of my recommended products.
