3 things I wish more people understood ➡️

1️⃣ If you’re dealing with acne, pigmentation, rashes/eczema, hair loss, dandruff, etc. the sooner you get evaluated & on the appropriate regimen for you the better. This will save you time, effort, & money. Stop listening to randos on the internet!

2️⃣ I’ve said this time & time again, but I really care less about the BRANDS that you’re using & more about what products are actually in your routine. Like do you have a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, & sunscreen? Are you using a retinol product you love? Like there are a ton of amazing brands and products out there, so much of brand choice is personal preference.

3️⃣ If you want to do what you can do minimize the negative effects of chronic UV exposure, wearing sunscreen alone isn’t enough. Sunscreen isn’t perfect - there’s application error (not applying enough, missing areas, not reapplying, hard to apply areas like the scalp, etc.) Instead use sunscreen with other sun protective methods like sun protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, seeking shade, & some supplements!

Get your skin checked people!! True story here - this patient thought this lesion was just a scar from an old acne breakout.
I sent for biopsy, which confirmed my suspicion for a localized skin cancer, a basal cell carcinoma.

BCC’s are the most common type of skin cancer & can be successfully treated, especially when caught early.

They can be SUBTLE in the beginning & can present as a pearly pink or red bump, a red scaly patch, an open or recurring sore, a scar-like patch, or a shiny discolored bump.

They become more common as you age, but I’ve diagnosed patients in their twenties and thirties with BCCs as well (including this specific case here!).

So get your skin checked ☑️ These things are easily treated when caught early!

If you have….

- KERATOSIS PILARIS: Aka that rough and bumpy skin often on the backs of the arms and legs. Use ingredients to moisturize & gently exfoliate the skin like glycolic/lactic/salicylic acid, urea, & sometimes retinoids. An exfoliating wash or scrub in the shower can also help.

- STRETCH MARKS: Retinoids have been shown to reduce their appearance, OTC I recommend Differin, but if you have access to prescription strength better yet! Massage the area twice daily with a thick moisturizing cream with hyaluronic acid.

- MELASMA: Lots of products on the market can help to improve this stubborn hyperpigmentation - I like ingredients like tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, Kojic acid, vitamin C, & retinoids. Of course, you can’t use them all so pick a couple well formulated products and stick to those. I also recommended STRICT photo protection & use of a tinted sunscreen.

My NON-NEGOTIABLES When it Comes to Skin Health >>>

It really is much more simple than you think 💓

1. I live a sun protective lifestyle - I use hats, sun protective clothing, & sunglasses. I sit in the shade. I’ve taken supplements like @heliocare_usa. And of course, I wear sunscreen on my face every day, on any exposed areas, & reapply when I am outside.

2. My regimen is dedicated to protecting & maintaining a healthy skin barrier. This means I don’t overuse active ingredients, I keep my regimen simple, I use gentle products, & focus on hydrating & moisturizing my skin.

3. Don’t ignore the lifestyle factors. I eat a high protein diet & try to limit ultra processed foods. I focus on whole foods & exercise 4 days a week. But like you have to LIVE, so I follow the 80/20 rule.

4. SLEEP. Arguably one of the most important factors & often underrated. Experts recommend you get between 7-8 hours every night.

5. I use evidence-based skincare products, like retinaldehyde every other night as tolerated.

6. Obviously, excessive alcohol intake is not good for us in many ways, but it can also negatively affect our skin too. I try to limit alcohol intake as much as possible.

What are some of your non-negotiables??
