Answering YOUR Most Frequently Asked Questions about Neuromodulator Injections (Aka BOTOX)

  1. What’s the difference between the different brands?

In the U.S., we have Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. All are type A botulinum toxins that temporarily reduce muscle activity to treat fine lines/wrinkles. Without getting too much into it, the primary difference lies in their accessory binding proteins. What does this mean for you? Not much, one may work better for you than the other. Some people have a preference, some people don’t. Another way to think of it is like Coke vs. Pepsi. The only way to know which one you may prefer would be to try some of the different brands. Of course, I have to mention the newest kid on the block, Daxxify! Daxxify was recently approved for use in the U.S. Some offices have access to using the product now, and I anticipate more will begin to integrate it into their practice within the next year. The key differentiating factor from the other neurotoxins we have is Daxi has been shown to have double the longevity. Studies show that results from Daxxify can last anywhere from 6-9 months (instead of the traditional 3-4). It uses a synthetic, proprietary Peptide Exchange Technology that helps to stabilize the neurotoxin and contributes to its unique, long-lasting effects.

  2. When should I start?

Since everyone ages differently, there’s no universal age. In general, I recommend starting when you start to notice lines at rest. For some people this may be their mid-twenties, for others it may be early thirties. On average, I’m seeing most people starting late twenties to early thirties.

  3. How long does it last?

On average, traditional tox lasts about 3-4 months (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau). You won’t notice results right away either. You’ll start to notice results in about 3-7 days (depending on the product) with full results by the 2 weeks. I’ll often recommend a 2 week follow-up for any refinement and make sure everything is fire. Remember, the good (and bad) thing about toxins is that they are temporary! *As mentioned above, Daxxify is the only neurotoxin available with longer longevity. Studies have shown that it can last up to 6 – 9 months depending on the patient.

  4. Planning Botox before a wedding or big event, when should I get it?

First, never do anything BRAND new right before. Ideally, you should try it for the first time at least 6 months before to see how you like the results. If you love them and want to get a treatment before your event, I recommend scheduling your appointment 4-6 weeks before!

  5. Is it painful?

You’ll feel a quick poke. I use a TINY insulin needle and apply ice prior to injection. Most of my patients say, “wait, was that it?”

  6. What can I expect at my appointment?

We’ll do a thorough assessment, I will go over risks, benefits, potential side effects, and my recommendations for treatment with you. After you sign the consent, I’ll draw up the product and the actual injections only take a few minutes. After your injections, you’ll notice little mosquito bite like bumps where we injected. Don’t worry, these dissipate within about 15-20 minutes or so.

  7. Anything I should avoid prior to or after treatment?

Since bruising is possible, you may want to avoid any blood thinners 48 hours prior to the appointment (Aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, garlic or ginseng supplements, and alcohol). However, if you are taking of these things for cardiac purposes, I don’t recommend discontinuing for a little Tox – but just be aware you may be more likely to have a little bruise. I recommend avoiding working out, laying down, or facial massage for 4 hours after treatment.

That should cover the most common questions that I get, but let me know if you have any more!
